DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS:

Academic Team

Academic team plays a fast-paced, competitive team game quizzing students on their knowledge in the areas of math, science, literature, social studies, and fine arts, with a few sports and popular culture questions thrown in for fun.  Academic team is a MSHSAA activity so teams participate in district and state competitions, and students can earn letters.  The Helias team participates in 10 – 12 Saturday tournaments and two online tournaments each year.  Practices are held two or three days right after school from mid-October through mid-April.  If you enjoy TV shows such as Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, you’ll like academic team.  Shelley Swoyer is the moderators of the Academic Team with assistance from Patty Lockenvitz.

Band

Concert Band:  The Concert Band is the chief instrumental ensemble at Helias.  The Concert band meets from October through May and involves all students involved in the band program.  The ensemble plays a wide range of music, both in style and difficulty.  The Concert Band gives at least three public performances every school year.  The Concert Band also participates every year in the MSHSAA State Music Festival and periodically travels out-of-town, having once participated in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL.

Drumline:
A subset of the Marching Crusaders, the Helias Drumline in recent years has started learning and performing a second show in addition to the full Marching Crusader field show.  The Drumline is not for percussionists only.

Woodwind Choir:  The woodwind choir is a relatively new ensemble at Helias, starting in January of 2008.  This ensemble is comprised of students from the Concert Band who meet twice a week to learn additional music.  The music is for woodwinds only (Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophone, and Bassoon), allowing for different challenges than what is typically presented in a typical concert band setting.  The Woodwind Choir, like the Concert Band, participates in the MSHSAA State Music Festival.

Jazz Band:  The Jazz Band is an important ensemble at Helias and any high school, as it helps students become acquainted with a truly American art form.  Students in Jazz Band learn a variety of jazz styles, including the unique jazz characteristics of swing, syncopation, and improvisation.  The Jazz Band meets during the winter and through May.  The Jazz Band performs at numerous local venues, as well as the occasional out-of-town competition.

Musical Orchestra:
The Helias spring musical would not be complete without the addition of instrumental music; music that is provided by the orchestra.  The Music Orchestra is comprised of Helias Concert Band students, Helias alumni, and Jefferson City community musicians.  The music for this orchestra is often more difficult than typical high school level music, providing a unique challenge to participating students.

Book Club

The book club is an organization open to freshman through seniors.  Students meet once a month to discuss a book selected by the students.  The club is not necessarily for “brainiacs, but for those who enjoy reading.”  The monthly meetings are a very relaxed way to meet with others to discuss a novel on a level that the group chooses.  You will meet new people and read books that you may not have chosen on your own, so the club opens you to a variety of new things.

Chorus/Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is the top vocal ensemble at Helias, comprised of the best singers at the school.  Students must pass a singing audition, held in April, to be included in this talented ensemble.  The Concert Choir maintains as active performance schedule, including at least four public concerts and performances at community events.  Past events have included the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony, the St. Peter’s Church annual Veterans Day Mass, and various community organizations during the Christmas Season.  The Helias Concert Choir performs a broad range of musical styles, including madrigals from the Renaissance, traditional Choir literature, and music from current Broadway Musicals.  The Concert Choir participates every year in the MSHSAA State Music Festival Chorus.

The Helias Chorus is a developmental choir, comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores. In this choir, singers learn the basics of music including how to read music and how to sing multiple parts.  Many of the singers in Chorus go on to participate in Concert Choir after singing in Chorus for a year or two.

Journalism Club

The Helias Journalism Club is currently in its sixth year of newspaper production, after many decades of inactivity. This year will be the fifth year Mr. Brandon Martin has moderated the club. The club produces a quarterly newspaper, usually print, sometimes online.
Over the production of four newspapers a year, students learn or become more proficient in writing, editing, design, photography, and all the history, rules, and techniques of American journalism. The club always strives to ensure they meet Associated Press guidelines.
Every spring, the Helias Journalism Club goes to Columbia, Missouri, to take part in the University of Missouri’s Journalism School’s “J-Day”. This year the club hopes to bring home more accolades from this world-class, interscholastic event.
If you would like a copy of the student print newspaper, The Crusader Raid, simply email Mr. Brandon Martin, and he’ll send you a copy.
Questions, concerns, story ideas, and compliments can be sent to bmartin@heliascatholic.com.

Student Ambassadors

The Student Ambassadors are students who represent Helias by giving tours of the school to visiting groups and individuals such as the incoming 9th graders, alumni and spouses revisiting the school during reunions, Leadership Jefferson City, and local Rotary Clubs.  They also work closely with the Helias Foundation in serving at special events.

The Student Ambassadors are nominated and selected by all the Helias faculty members.  Students are selected by what the teachers see as the students' ability of being outstanding representatives of Helias High School.  The students must be able to interact with and speak in front of large groups as well as field questions from potential students, parents, and alumni.

There are about ten students from each class selected to be Student Ambassadors.

Student Council (Stu-Co)

  • Elected by their classmates, the Student Council is a co-curricular organization that serves a critical role in assuring that a variety of enjoyable, wholesome student activities are offered throughout the year.  Secondarily, the Student Council serves as the student government and, therefore, as the liaison between the students and the administration.  The role of the Council is limited only by their collective imaginations as they strive to enhance the efforts of Helias to develop well-rounded students by providing enjoyable, entertaining, social experiences.
  • Student Council activities are conducted throughout the year, but a major undertaking is the organization and conduct of all homecoming activities.
  • A member of the National Association of Student Councils, Helias utilizes the Student Council to communicate important information about school and school events to the student body while providing a valuable leadership and responsibility opportunity for the membership.

Thundercats

Thundercats Book Club

Do you like to eat, spend time with a group of fun people, read, and talk about books?  Then Thundercats Book Club may be for you.  Thundercats is a very lively, informal group that meets monthly at 5:45 in the library to talk about a book you select.  Anyone can suggest a book, and the group votes on the book to read for the following month.  Members take turns coming up with questions and leading the discussion for a book, but no one has to lead if he or she feels uncomfortable doing so.  Students from every grade level are welcome.  Oh yes, eating – we buy Little Caesar’s pizza (entirely optional but cheap) to munch while talking, or you are welcome to bring your own food.   Come check us out or talk to Ms. Swoyer in the library for more information.

Thundercats.  The October meeting will be held on Oct. 20 at 5:30 in the library.  The book is Life of Pi by Yann Martel.  The November meeting will be on Nov. 17 at 5:30, and the book is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K. Dick.
