Helias vs Jefferson City (10-20-11)

The Helias volleyball teams travelled down Stadium Blvd. Thursday, Oct. 20 to take on the Lady Jays. The freshmen B team started the evening off with a 25-19, 25-8 win to finish their season with an undefeated record of 14-0. Ashley Tichelkamp had 18 service points with 8 aces, Megan Villanueva had 10 assists and 3 kills, Katie Verry had 4 kills and 5 digs, Allie Strope added 5 service points and 7 digs, Regan Krummen had 5 service points and 6 assists, Hannah Jenkins added 5 kills and Rachel Wilson had 4 kills. The A team also completed and undefeated season at 25-0-1 with a 25-20, 21-25, 25-23 victory. Abby Block had 26 assists, 10 service points and 9 digs, MaKenzi Meyer had 10 sercie points, 6 kills and 9 digs, Morgan Rundle added 8 kills and 10 digs, Leslie Ortmeyer had 5 kills and 3 blocks, Abby Farrow and Shanna Luebbert contributed 12 digs each and Hannah Warren had 13 digs. The jv finished their season at 25-6-3 with a 14-25, 11-25 loss. Tory Wiley had 4 kills, Samantha Bruemmer had 6 assists and Alex Trower added 4 digs.

The varsity match was an exciting 3 set match which Helias won 25-22, 20-25, 25-18. The first set saw Helias build leads of 9-4 and 17-8 before the Lady Jays stormed back with a 10-2 run. The Lady Crusaders pulled away again to take the first set. With momentum on their side, Helias jumped to a quick 4-0 lead before JC scored 5 points in a row. The Lady Jays eventually took a 14-10 lead they never relenquished and went on to win the second set. The third match was what you would expect as it was close in the beginning. Helias started pulling away behind the serve of Tess Wiley to take a 14-8 lead and forcing JC to call a tiimeout. The Lady Crusaders were able to side out very well allowing the Lady Jays to score only 6 points off their serve. That efficiency let Helias continue to build on their lead and JC wasn't able to gain any momentum. The lead swelled to 8 points on 4 different occasions before Helias closed out the set and match by a 7 point margin.

The serve receive passing was outstanding on the night with a 2.31 rating in the first set, 2.25 in the second set and 2.18 for the match. The defense was also very good with 60 digs, 2 solo blocks and 12 assist blocks. Eli Sandbothe had 12 service points, 8 kills and 3 blocks, Krista Haslag had 11 kills and 4 blocks, Tess Wiley added 11 kills, 8 digs, 5 service points and 2 blocks, Sidney Lammers had 29 assists, 6 digs and 2 blocks, Haley Bax contributed 6 service points and 10 digs, Rachel Werner had 12 digs and Nicole Lamb added 11 digs. The win improved the season record to 22-4-2. The varsity will travel to Quincy, IL on Oct. 21-22 to participate in a 32 team tournament.
