The Helias Lady Crusader volleyball teams travelled to Camdenton on Monday, Oct. 17 and came away with three victories. The freshmen won their match 25-20, 25-11. Abby Block had 16 assists and 6 service points, MaKenzi Meyer had 7 kills and 2 blocks, Shanna Luebbert had 6 service points and 4 digs and Leslie Ortmeyer had 7 service points, 2 kills and 2 blocks. The freshmen record improved to 24-0-1. The jv ran their record to 25-5-3 with a 25-17, 25-23 win. Samantha Bruemmer had 14 assists and 6 kills, Lindsey Griggs had 10 assists and 7 digs, Erica Haslag added 8 digs, Tory Wiley had 7 kills while Laura Schieber and Jordyn West had 4 kills each.
The varsity match featured several runs by both teams. Camdenton jumped to a 4-8 lead in the first set before Helias went on a 7-0 run to go up 11-8. The Lady Lakers immediately scored 6 points in a row aided by 3 hitting errors by Helias. The Lady Crusaders then scored 8 points in a row to go back ahead 20-15. Helias had a lead of 23-20 before Camdenton closed out the first set with another 5 point run to wiin 25-23. While Helias was able to serve receive very well (2.28) the hitters were not able to establish a rythym as they hit -.110 for the set with only 7 kills and 11 errors. The second set was similar to the first. Helias took the 8-4 lead in this set before Camdenton took a 9-8 lead behind 5 straight points. The Lady Crusaders then built leads of 17-12 and 21-17 before the Lady Lakers tied it at 21. Helias earned a side out and Rachel Werner served 3 points in a row to force a third set. Helias had fewer unforced errors in the third set. The serve receive was outstanding as Helias was able to convert on 10 of 13 first serves by Camdenton and held them to only 5 points off their serve. The last lead by the Lady Lakers was at 9-7 before the Lady Crusaders pulled away to a 23-13 lead. Four consecutive hitting errors allowed Camdenton to pull to within 23-17 before Helias scored the final two points to win the set 25-17 and the match. Eli Sandbothe had 10 service points, 6 kills and 2 blocks, Haley Bax had 10 service points, 10 digs and 2 blocks, Krista Haslag had 8 kills and 8 blocks, Tess Wiley added 11 kills, Sidney Lammers had 18 assists and 5 digs, Werner contributed 11 service points and 6 digs and Nicole Lamb added 8 digs. The varsity record is now 21-4-2.
All the volleyball teams will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 20 against Jefferson City. The freshmen matches start at 4:45 pm, the jv match begins at 6:15 with the varsity match to follow.
