Lady Kewpies Drop Lady Crusaders ~ The #7 class five state ranked Hickman Lady Kewpies defeated the Helias Lady Crusaders 65-43. Helias held an early 8-5 lead, before Hickman went on an 18-3 run to end the quarter giving them a 23-11 lead. Hickman went on to outscore the Lady Crusaders 29-26 in the second half, as all five Lady Kewpie starters reached double figures in the scoring column. Helias settled down after the first quarter, and turned it over only 4 times in the final three quarters, but could not overcome a cold night shooting. Taylor Hagenhoff had 13 points to lead in scoring for Helias, while Bre Zanders added 11. Hillary Hentges 7, Emma Verslues 6, and Kelsi Bernskoetter 6 also reached the scoring column.

Lady Crusaders Win in Gary Filbert Classic

Helias Girls Win in Gary Filbert Classic ~ Playing thier second game in as many nights, the Lady Crusaders were victorious over a district opponent - Fulton - the night before, and this time defeated Mexico 56-45 - another district opponent. The district touranment will be hosted by Mexico this year. Teams in the district include: Helias, Marshall, Kriksville, Moberly, Fulton and Mexico - who entered the contest with a 5-game winning streak. For the second night in a row, Helias got off to a big start by jumping to an 18-6 lead. The Lady Bulldogs closed out the quarter on a 6-1 run, cutting the lead to 19-12. Mexico would match Helias first quarter output by putting up 19 points of their own. In the process, the Lady Bulldogs would hit five 3-pointers, giving them a total of six for the half. The Bulldogs took a 31-30 lead in to the locker room at the half. The third quarter saw only 16 points scored total between the two teams. Mexico held a 37-32 lead when Meghan Nappier came up with two huge plays on the defensive end of the floor. Play one saw her tie up the ball with the arrow pointed the Crusader's way. That led to a basket by Emma Verslues. The next possession Nappier stripped a Mexico player of the ball and drove the ball down the floor for a layup and it was 37-36. Those two plays seemed to give Helias the momentum. The teams traded baskets to close out the quarter, with Mexico clinging to a slim 39-38 lead. The fourth quarter seemed destined to be a defensive struggle like the third. With just under three minutes remaining in the game, the score was knotted at 43-43. The Helias defense seemed to put the clamps down at that point, and the Lady Crusaders would end the game on a 13-2 run, including the last 11 points of the game. Bre Zanders and Taylor Hagenhoff accounted for 16 of the 18 Lady Crusader points in the quarter. Zanders had 9, while Hagenhoff added 7. Between the two, they were 7 of 7 from the charity stripe. Hagenhoff led all scorers with 21 points, while Zanders had 16 points to go along with a team leading 8 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Hillary Hentges had 6 rebounds while Emma Verslues had 5. Hagenhoff had 5 assists and Nappier had 3 steals. The Lady Crusaders are now 12-4.

Helias Varsity Softball Splits Twin Bill With Webb City.

Helias Varsity Softball Splits Twin Bill With Webb City. The Lady Saders faced off with Southwest Missouri softball power Webb City and split a double header. In the opening game, Helias lost an early 3-2 lead, as Webb City took a 4-3 advantage in to the bottom of the sixth. In that frame, Helias came up with two runs to regain the lead, with Paige Bange’s bases loaded walk putting Helias up 5-4. The drama-packed seventh inning saw Webb City load the bases with no out in the top half. The Webb batter hit a line drive to right which Kaysie Scheuler made a running grab and fired to first to double off the runner. Jordan Rackers then threw home, but the Webb runner beat the throw to tie the score. A heads up Hailey Weavers then threw to third to nail the runner trying to take an extra base. Triple Play!!! Hillary Hentges led off the bottom half of the seventh by reaching on an error. Hentges advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then went to third on an infield out. With two strikes on the batter, Webb City’s catcher tried to pick Hentges off third. An alert Hentges broke home on the throw, and beat the return throw to home to score the winning run, as Helias came away with a 6-5 victory. Things were going well for the Lady Saders in the second game as a bases loaded single by Hayley Strope put Helias up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Kaylie LeCuru doubled home another run and an infield RBI out by Liz Czarnecki made it 4-0 Helias after four innings of play. Webb City came alive by plating 2 in the fifth and 4 in the sixth, to take a 6-4 lead going in to the bottom of the seventh. With two outs Kaysie Scheuler beat out an infield hit. Paige Bange demonstrated “hero juice” again by driving a pitch over the center field fence to tie the game at 6-6, sending the game in to extra innings. It was all Webb City in the eighth inning, as they exploded for 5 runs in their half of the frame. The Helias bats went silent in the bottom of the inning, giving Webb City an 11-6 win and a split in the twin bill.
